The Soul of Your Story: Reclaiming Authenticity in an AI World
For coaches, consultants, and entrepreneurs wanting to write a transformational book to make a difference in their world, a book isn’t just a collection of words; it’s a window into your unique experience, your journey, and your perspective. It’s a means of connecting with your audience on a human level, building trust and establishing authority. This vital connection is precisely what’s at risk when you rely too heavily on AI for your book’s content.
At this point in our evolution, AI lacks authentic lived experience. It cannot draw from personal moments like your childhood, any of the various heartbreaks you may have experienced, or your spiritual discoveries. Yet, these are often the very elements that make a book powerful, relatable, and transformative for readers. Many readers seek a human presence and emotional truth, but AI still falls short in that area, although some readers may be hard-pressed to put into words what’s actually missing. They just know something is missing. This can lead them to disconnect from your writing and the ideas you so urgently want to share.
Consider these specific authenticity issues that can plague AI-generated text:
- Fabricated Facts and Citations: This is perhaps the most dangerous flaw, particularly for nonfiction authors. AI can confidently produce incorrect facts, invented quotations, nonexistent studies, inaccurate statistics, and fabricated references. A book that contains misinformation will damage your credibility as an expert and harm your business and your reputation.
- Diluted Emotional Authenticity: While AI can generate emotionally appropriate language, it may sound okay but it lacks the author’s genuine emotional truth and liveliness. Readers, especially of books focused on personal growth or transformation, can sense when the emotion isn’t genuine. They are looking for your vulnerability, your insights, and your real feelings, not a synthetic imitation of a human being.
- Loss of Productive Struggle: The process of writing a book is often a journey of self-discovery and I believe that the fact that writing an excellent book is so challenging is exactly what makes it such a wonderful transformational project for the author. Using AI to write your book can “short-circuit” your deep engagement with the ideas you want to share with your reader: AI will instantly provide formulations that aren’t actually all your own ideas. The upshot is that you might end with a book manuscript, but you’ve outsourced the deep personal transformation that was available to you had you done the deep work writing a book requires of us. Using AI to write your book also bypasses the intellectual development and distinctive voice that emerges from wrestling with complex concepts.
We also have to broach the fact that, as of this writing, AI does not have a soul. You do. So do your human readers. And I believe that when we use AI to generate our books we lose that mysterious aspect of soul that readers today need more than ever. So, use AI to brainstorm, generate ideas, possibly even develop a structure for your book. But don’t hand over the powerful, magical task of doing the actual writing a book to your AI. The best books don’t just provide information. They make their readers connect to their hearts. And that is something I believe only a human author can help them do.
