What is Content Marketing?

As a content writer with years of experience behind me I love the process of making my clients’ online marketing efforts as painless as possible. At some point, they usually come to see their online content marketing efforts as a critical part of their marketing and when the leads start to roll in, the excitement rises apace. We all want to serve more people and make more money and that’s exactly what I’m here to help my clients do. It’s very satisfying work.

The interesting thing, however, is that although it’s been around for a while, there is still a fair bit of confusion out there as to what content marketing actually is.

Would you like my definition?

Content Marketing is the process of telling your business story online in a variety of ways that appeal to your perfect customer and deliver value. It’s information that is related to your product or service and you either develop it yourself or share the material, with attribution, that others have created.
Your online marketing content is focused on helping your potential customers understand your product or service and it is designed to lighten their load in some way.

It builds trust and authority for you amongst your ideal customers and it also supports your relationship with them. It’s a way of driving sales without traditional hard sell tactics.

In providing helpful online content, you are positioning yourself as a valuable resource for people who need what you provide.

Examples of content include:

  • Blogs
  • White papers
  • Downloadable templates
  • Free audio recordings
  • Facebook postings
  • LinkedIn activity
  • YouTube videos
  • Slideshare presentations and
  • Podcasts

It’s important that you post content consistently – a blog that is updated every six or eight months will add zero value to your online reputation whereas one that is refreshed at least once a week will pack a powerful punch. Your content needs to appeal to two separate audiences: the real people who might potentially buy from you and the web crawlers that want to know if you merit a Page One search ranking. So that means that your content needs to be cleverly written and cleverly optimized for search.

There is a lot to know about content marketing and it can seem confusing. I started to learn about the field half a dozen years ago when I wanted my own small business to start showing up better online. I had heard that there was a way to make more money with my online promotional activities and I didn’t have a clue how to do that. I dove in and invested in some extensive coaching. And I never looked back. But I do remember how lost I felt when it seemed as though everybody in the entire universe knew how this online marketing stuff worked. Except me.

May I help you with that? My business offers content marketing assistance to businesses that need a guiding hand in the heroic effort to generate more business through their online activities.
